Burton didn't find Darlington to be learning experience
DARLINGTON, S.C. - Jeff Burton found running the car of tomorrow at Darlington Raceway to be a bit confusing Sunday.
Although he finished 10th in the rain-delayed Dodge Avenger 500 Nextel Cup race, Jeff Burton says that he struggled to get a handle on his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.
"We were just out of control all day, and I have a hard time understanding where we were, much less where we went," he said when asked if the temperature fluctuation was an issue. "We just never had enough grip; rear grip was always iffy, and [it was] just a long day. When you're that far off, it's hard to learn anything."
Still, he wouldn't characterize the team's comeback to a top-10 finish as a surprise. He has come to expect this ability to rally in his group.
"One thing I know about this team is we never quit," he said. "When things are going well, we dig in and keep going. That's what I'm really proud of about this group. They never quit. We can be running 35th with five [laps] to go and think we still have a chance, that's just how we are."
