Burton: 24/48 pushed issue, didn't cheat
Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson failed to pass inspection last Friday when the No. 24 and No. 48 cars were ruled to have illegal front fenders. Johnson and Jeff Gordon started Sunday's race at Sonoma in the 41st and 42nd position. Craig Shemon and James Washington asked Jeff Burton, who finished third, why those top Chevrolets failed on Friday...
Jeff Burton: "With the 24 and the 48, they were pushing an area that NASCAR has told us not to push in. But they're pushing an area that we had pushed in for 50 years. So, it's a little bit different situation. I don't believe that that's gonna hurt their performance in New Hampshire this coming week. I believe that they're still gonna go out there and be really competitive. This was something that they did for this racetrack in particular. I don't think they've been getting by with something that all of a sudden now NASCAR caught onto. I think that, as we went with the Car of Tomorrow, went through inspection process, they went to work in an area that they thought they were OK to work in. It wasn't an area that could be hidden. It wasn't an area that we weren't gonna see. I think it was more of a...they were obviously pushing the issue, which is what we do every week, but don't think they were blatantly cheating. I think that they thought it was maybe [that] NASCAR would say 'Hey, you can't do that' and then they could fix it. I don't think they anticipated the reaction from NASCAR."
